Hero or villan? Another guy like Castro whoes history depends on who you talk to. Check out the NPR broadcast on Pinochet’s death. In my opinion I don’t think he was a hero. Any success or good he brought to Chile is not justified by his brutality. The torture and human rights abuses under his leadership made him a criminal. Jonathan  Kandell, a journalist on IHT writes:

A [Chilean] government-commissioned report issued in 2004 concluded that almost 28,000 people had been tortured during the general’s reign.

I wonder what he thought at the end of his life?
